- Description
- 1 videocassette (VHS, PAL) (174 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
- Summary
- Companion video to the book Nuo: Tänze der Geistermasken im Erdgottkult in Anhui (China), by Rudolf Maria Brandl and Wang Zhaoqian (see *MGS (Chinese) 02-943). Ethnographic recordings made at various locations in the province of Anhui, China, in 1990 and 1994, documenting Nuo operas, a Chinese folk music form presented in wooden masks, and the associated rituals. The rituals include offerings of food, candles, and incense; processions; and ceremonies centering on the masks. Much of the footage depicts performances of dances, songs and chants, and instrumental music. The third part of the video (beginning at ca. 123 min.) contains unabridged footage of selected dances.
