- Summary
- Documentary on the sabar, a term that refers to an event, a dance, and a type of drum in Senegal. The event takes places in the streets or any open space, lasts several hours, and involves drummers and dancers who rise to dance from among the spectators. The film discusses the interaction between the drummers and dancers; the improvisatory nature of both music and dance; and the qualities that make for good dancing. Also examined are the evolution and extension of the sabar tradition, including the international dissemination of sabar music (notably that of Doudou N'Diaye Rose), the formation of professional dance companies, the teaching of sabar both within and outside Senegal, and the introduction of women drummers.
