Contents
  • Feature presentation (ca. 50 min.) / documentary on kung fu, a Chinese martial arts form which originated with the teachings of the sixth-century Buddhist monk Bodhidharma at the Shaolin temple in China. The program describes the arduous training undergone by the monks, and its underlying philosophy, which focused on developing chi (vital force) and mind-body coordination. The history of kung fu is traced from these beginnings to its decline after the defeat of the Boxer Rebellion (1900) and the depredations of Mao Tse Tung's Cultural Revolution. The program attributes Bruce Lee's contributions as actor and innovator to its revival and popularization in the western world. The present-day training of the monks at the Shaolin temple is depicted, as well as the activities of contemporary masters working in the west: Grandmaster Pan Qing Fu in Ontario, Canada; Sifu Shi Yan-Ming in New York City; Grandmaster Chan Pui in Florida; and Master Dennis Brown in Silver Springs, Md. The work of these masters and their students illustrates the many aspects of kung fu, both in its empty-handed and weaponed forms, and emphasizes its dual nature as a physical training system and a means of teaching discipline and ethics.
  • Special features: Interview with Grandmaster Pan Qing Fu (ca. 17 min.) / discussion of his training in China; his own teaching and students; his philosophy of the martial arts.
  • Additional footage of chi gong feats. Hard chi kung: Yinggong (ca. 13 min.) / with narration in Mandarin Chinese with English narration for final segment only. Contains graphic images.
  • Interview with master Dennis Brown (ca. 20 min.) / the African-American martial artist discusses his training in the U.S., and his belief in the martial arts as a way of life; he also gives advice in finding a good martial arts school and getting started in the training.
  • Biographies and contact information [still frames].
  • Interview with filmmaker Jim Grapek (ca. 16 min.) / the filmmaker, himself a martial artist, discusses various aspects of making this film, and his belief in the martial arts as a way of life; he also discusses his future film projects.
