[Begins abruptly.] William Leighton speaks about the International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Miss., in particular how Jackson came to be the U.S. site for the Competition; the Jackson Ballet [possibly also known as the Jackson Civic Ballet Company; later Ballet Mississippi]; his early career and how he came to work with Robert Joffrey and the Joffrey Ballet; Joffrey's work Gamelan; Joffrey's relatively greater renown outside of the U.S., particularly in the [former] U.S.S.R.; changes over the years in the jury members' view of what constitutes classical dancing; structure of the Competition in Jackson, including reasons for confidentiality of the numerical scoring; relationship of the Competition held in Jackson to the International Ballet Competition held in Varna, Moscow, and the other Competition-site cities; U.S. legislation concerning the Competition; value for a dancer of participating in such competitions; role of the U.S. regional competitions; more on the Competition in Jackson, including auxiliary activities and the facilities; Mississippi Ballet Theatre; an upcoming exhibition of painting and stage design from the collection of Nikita D.
