- Note
- "Inspired by the fact that stocks and bonds are, respectively, a medieval punishment and a physical form of restraint, this book chronicles the relationship in Western Civilization between profits and pain, the 'business' of torture."--Prospectus
- "Images of twenty-seven instruments of bondage, torture or execution, and text describing their employment to enforce power and profits, are letterpress-printed over handwritten trading records and original stock tickets from the New York Stock Exchange, circa 1910"--Prospectus
- "The text is printed in Gill Sans Condensed, with titling from early twentieth century wood type ... The book is bound in the style of nineteenth century ledgers, with the title in gold on the cover; it is contained in a portfolio-style, drop-spine box. Within the cover of each box a hand-dated envelope is inset; these envelopes once contained the stock tickets collaged within the book. Paper for the box, bookcovers and endsheets are handmade by Cave Paper."--Prospectus
- "Stocks and bonds was produced by Maureen Cummins in the Winter of 2000 while in residence at Pyramid Atlantic in Riverdale, Maryland. The residency was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts (a federal agency), under the Education and Access Program, which provides career development for teachers, students and professional artists. This book was letterpress-printed on handmade Fabriano paper. The type is Gill Sans. The ledger pages and stock tickets are from the G.H. Robinson Company, a stock brokerage firm that operated in New York in the early twentieth century" -- colophon.
