Summary
Episode of Daybreak, recorded January 16, 1983, aired February 3, 1983 on WCBS-TV, Channel 2. Interview with theatrical producer Joseph Papp about the current state of Broadway theater. Papp and hosts Marie Torre and Fred Noriega discuss the economics of producing a stage show, the effect of ticket prices on attendance, the preferences of theater audiences, the quality of current productions on Broadway, and the activities of theatrical producers and dramatists. Also discussed are the difference between Broadway and Off-Broadway production costs and the preference of producers and audiences for musicals over straight plays. Papp discusses the current production of David Hare's play Plenty at the Public Theater and what he sees as the need for government subsidized theater in the United States.
