- Summary
- Jerome Robbins directs a rehearsal of the sixth variation from I'm old fashioned. The piece is rehearsed as a duet, with Bart Cook dancing the male role and Maria Calegari and Darci Kistler both dancing the female role. The female role was cut from the final version of the variation, which was performed as a male solo. There are many interruptions and repetitions as Robbins develops choreography. The rehearsal lasts approximately 12 minutes. Afterwards Robbins discusses the music for the ballet with composer Morton Gould and pianist Richard Moredock. Robbins, Moredock, Gould, Cook and Calegari watch a video of Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth performing the dance I'm old fashioned in the motion picture You were never lovelier, and comment on the choreography.
- The last five minutes of the tape contain an excerpt of an interview with Jerome Robbins conducted by DeWitt Sage and filmed at Robbins' home. Robbins discusses the experience of making a ballet; the inspiration for Variations on I'm old fashioned; his admiration for Fred Astaire; the current status of the ballet's development; the difficulty of reconstructing the choreography of the original Astaire dance; his own choreographic process. The tape ends abruptly.
