Marcia Siegel introduces her subject, post-modern dance; speaks about the emergence of a new generation of choreographers including Merce Cunningham, Erick Hawkins, and Alwin Nikolais, that rebelled against the ideas of the previous generation; Cunningham's central role in post-modern dance; shows and speaks about slides intended to illustrate the abstract nature of Cunningham's work, including a work by Pablo Picasso, Cunningham's work Nocturnes; paintings by Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, and Cunningham's work Walkaround time; speaks extensively about Cunningham's theory of dance, including his view of dance as a complete entity in itself and his emphasis on spontaneity; John Cage's work and its influence on Cunningham's work; Cunningham's use of everyday movement; shows and speaks about slides illustrating the influence of Cunningham's ideas, including on the ballet dancer John Ware (?), Kenneth King and on Laura Dean, and on Paul Taylor's work Three epitaphs; shows and speaks about a film of Taylor's work Junction [ends abruptly].

Siegel at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minn., on Nov. 17, 1980; recording is of the seventh lecture in a program of eight, entitled Dance modernism, given by Siegel as part of the Meaning of modernism lecture series held at the Walker Art Center. Siegel made frequent use of slides and films to illustrate her lecture.
