- On January 30, 1925, spelunker Floyd Collins became trapped in a narrow passage of a cave near his home in Cave City, Kentucky. Despite rescue efforts which continued for more than two weeks, Collins died before he could be extricated from the passage. Coverage of the story via newspaper, motion picture newsreel and radio turned the tragedy into one of the first modern "media events."
