- Playwriting in the Schools (PITS) was an educational program established in 1985 under the sponsorship of producer/director Joseph Papp, the New York Shakespeare Festival and the New York City Board of Education. Conducted in collaboration with classroom teachers, the PITS program incorporated the study of playwriting, taught by playwrights, and drama in an effort to improve students' writing skills, and to develop their interest in acting, writing and directing for the theater. The program culminated in a final performance given by the students.
