  • Poet, stand-up comic, writer, singer and performer David Langston Smyrl has appeared in plays and musicals on and off-Broadway, writing the book, lyrics and music for some of the works in which he performed. During the 1970s and early 80s three of Smyrl's works were commissioned and produced by Joseph Papp and the New York Shakespeare Festival. These include On the lock-in (1977), directed by Robert Macbeth, a "A collage of scenes, soliloquies, and songs that give a picture of prison life where men have lost their "'plans.'"
