Description
1 videocassette (VHS, NTSC) (18 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
In an interview made during her first visit to the United States, Indian dancer Sanjukta Panigrahi discusses aspects of Odissi dance, a classical Indian dance form that originated in the state of Orissa. Panigrahi, who became a leading exponent of the form, began her training at a time when it was still the province of temple dancers rather than girls of good family. She describes how the technique was taught to her; the written and sculptural sources of the dances; the importance of the dancer's interpretation; and how she prepares for performance.
