Summary
  • Videocassette one (67 min.): [Relevant content begins at 34 min. and ends at 101 min.] Host Drew von Bergen offers brief discussion of National Press Club programs, introduction of notable guests and overview of the career and achievements of producer/director Joseph Papp. In his talk, entitled Hamlet and show business, Papp discusses his interest in Shakespeare's Hamlet; the work's relevance to the theater; what interests him about a play; the state of commercial theater; the revival of musicals on Broadway; the relationship between theater and life in the works he chooses to produce; classic plays and their place in the theater; his decision to produce The pirates of Penzance starring Linda Ronstadt; the quality of a play as being "alive"; the absence of good actors currently on the stage; stage actors he admires; the role of skilled stage actors in keeping the theater alive. During the question and answers session, Papp discusses the possibility of bringing his production of The pirates of Penzance to Washington; his refusal of $223,000 in private support for the New York Shakespeare Festival's summer program at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park in response to New York City's withdrawal of funding. [Talk is continued on videocassette two.]
  • Videocassette two (55 min.): [Relevant content begins at 30 min. and ends at 85 min., overlaping slightly with content of videocassette one.] Papp continues answering questions at his National Press Club luncheon. Papp discusses his preference for producing new works by living writers that "say something about our life and times"; the state of the black theater and accomplishments of the Negro Ensemble Company; the likely success of political spoofs on Broadway; taking his shows to the Soviet Union and cultural exchange between the two countries; his discovery while in the Soviet Union of the play The nest of the wood grouse by Victor Rozov; creativity versus commericalism in the theater; ticket prices and the middle classes' support of the theater; Michael Moriarty's performance in his production of Richard III. Papp is presented with a National Press Club certificate of appreciation and a necktie following the Q & A.
