- Summary
- Executive director Liz Thompson, business director Linda Cliggett, and associate director Norton Owen speak to a group of interns at the beginning of the 1984 Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. Owen introduces the session and explains why it is being videotaped. The interns, working in the box office and audience development department or as theater technicians, introduce themselves. Thompson discusses various aspects of her job as executive director; the spirit of Jacob's Pillow; her attempt to present a diverse spectrum of dance; the ephemerality of dance and efforts to preserve it; the graphics on Jacob's Pillow printed materials; her effort to introduce audiences to new dance; how she chooses companies for the festival; her dance career; the Jacob's Pillow audience and how it has changed in recent years; the Jacob's Pillow board of directors; how she attempts to balance financial concerns with the educational and artistic goals of Jacob's Pillow; dance literacy among the general public and the relationship between dance and physical fitness. Thompson's comments last approximately 45 minutes.
- Linda Cliggett discusses her job as business director of Jacob's Pillow; the intern program; the growth of the budget in recent years. Thompson discusses changes she has made to the school at Jacob's Pillow; off-site productions; her decision to open the grounds to festival audiences. Cliggett discusses a pie-chart showing sources of income and how money is spent. Throughout the session the interns ask questions, which lead to discussions of how the festival can attract a broader audience; the purpose of the Gala that opens each season; the relationship between Martha Graham and Ted Shawn. The session closes with further discussion of budget management and the tax-exempt status of Jacob's Pillow.
