Summary
  • Inside/out is a series of programs presented outdoors, in which artists interact with the audience. The first program (July 28) features Mae-ja Kim, a professor and performer of Korean dance. Another Korean dancer translates for Kim, who speaks only in Korean. The program includes examples of several varieties of traditional Korean dance, starting with court dance. The translator names and describes dance steps while Kim demonstrates them and instructs members of the audience on stage. Next, Kim demonstrates steps from folk dance and dance drama. Some of the demonstrations are accompanied by music. At the end of the program Kim performs a solo based on aspects of shamanism.
  • The second Inside/out program (Aug. 11) is a one-man show presented by Thom Molinaro, including anecdotes about his theatrical career, songs and mime. Molinaro discusses auditioning for Call me madam; auditioning for La cage aux folles; supporting himself by dog-sitting during his early years as a "gypsy;" working and studying in Paris; meetings with Lena Horne; working at the Metropolitan Opera; the importance of dance in his career. He sings "He loves me," "Little boy blue," "Where or when," "Blues in the night," and "Carousel." At the end of the program, he performs two mime pieces, the first set to an excerpt from Vivaldi's Four seasons, the second titled The kite.
