Description
1 videocassette (VHS) (29 min.) : sd., col. SP; 1/2 in.
Summary
  • New York Senator Roy Goodman discusses the New York State budget and funding for the arts with guests New York Shakespeare Festival producer Joseph Papp, Metropolitan Museum of Art president William Macomber and New York Philharmonic managing director Albert K. Webster. Senator Goodman discusses the fiscal problems, which began in the mid 1970s, that have resulted in an $11.8 million reduction in arts spending in New York State; the impact of the arts on the state's economy; his championship of the arts and efforts to obtain $50 million in arts allocations for the 1985-86 fiscal year; and the actions citizens and legislators can take to enhance the artistic and cultural life of New York.
  • Papp discusses the effect of the funding reductions on small theatrical groups; the importance of the arts to the New York State economy; the economics and profitability of his Broadway musical A chorus line; the humanizing effect of the arts; the cost of running the Public Theater and its current amount of reliance on governmental support; the importance of making theater affordable to youth; and the need for Governor Cuomo to take a stronger stand on the arts. Macomber discusses the Metropolitan's best attended exhibitions and their effect on the local economy; culture as a commodity for New York State; and the case for the restoration of New York's arts funding. Webster discusses the complexity of running the New York Philharmonic orchestra with its 106 individual musicans and how the music comes together creatively in a performance.
