Summary
  • Tony Randall examines the state of theater on Broadway and in London's West End with a variety of theater professionals for television special aired WWOR-TV. Program features interviews with producer/director Joseph Papp at 10:24 and 38:51. Papp discusses the high cost of tickets on Broadway, the sources of revenue for his Public Theater; his early exposure to and interest in Shakespeare; his decision to form a Shakespearean theatrical company of American actors; and the virtues of American actors performing Shakespearean roles; the tastes and habits of American, in comparison with British, theatergoers; the decline of dramatic plays on Broadway in favor of more costly and spectacular musicals; the economics of producing a show in New York compared with London; importing shows from London to Broadway; the American audience's appreciation of British theater; American shows produced in London; the subsidization of theater in the United States and Great Britian; British actors who have enjoyed success on Broadway; the exchange of actors between New York and London; the adaptation of theatrical works for television; and the need for cultural exchange within the English speaking theatrical world.
