- Summary
- Entrant in the Dance Films Association's 32nd annual Dance on Camera Festival 2004. Documentary on H.T. Chen and Dancers [also known as Chen and Dancers], a modern dance company based in New York City's Chinatown. The program examines not only the company's ties to its home community and its efforts to involve Asian Americans in artistic endeavors, but its achievements in reaching beyond ethnic boundaries and developing a global outlook. Its strong relationships with Dance Theater Workshop, La MaMa E.T.C., Williams College, and Chuck Davis's African-American Dance Ensemble are highlighted, as are its recent outreach activities in Massachusetts, Arizona, and Chicago. Dancer Renouard Gee eloquently describes how he gained a greater appreciation of his Asian heritage through performing with the company. The video closes with the speeches of artistic director H.T. Chen and associate director Dian Dong upon receiving the 2002 New York State Governor's Arts Awards. The numerous performance excerpts include: Mott Street; The Great Wall; Lemon moon; The rise of the phoenix; Double happiness, 100 sorrows; Iron fan dance; Mosquito dance; Hidden voices; Transparent hinges; Warriors of light; Bian dan.
