Summary

Rare archival films, stills and interviews illuminate the rise of modern dance in Europe and its founders, Rudolf Laban, Mary Wigman and Kurt Jooss. Part I explores the influence of Laban and his theories of movement on Wigman and Jooss, and details the careers of all three through the preparations for the 1936 Olympics. Part II looks at how the rise of the Nazi party affected the choreographers and their subsequent careers. The film includes demonstrations by students of the techniques and theories discussed.
