Summary

Tape contains two discussion sessions about Shakespeare with New York City high school students. The first session (ca 48 min.) is conducted by Estelle Parsons in a public school classroom. Parsons discusses her efforts to form a multi-racial cast for the performance of Shakespearean plays for students, the aims of the project and her choice to produce Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, which the students have just seen. Parsons also discusses Shakespearean language and the use of a variety of languages in her production, as well as Papp's fundraising efforts on behalf of the project. Discussion concludes with students' responses to the production.
The second discussion (ca. 49:00 to 113:00 min. ) is lead by actor Cleavon Little at the Belasco Theatre. Little discusses his difficulty relating to conventional productions of Shakespeare; his early years as a student and first job; his choice to become an actor and his first experience playing a Shakespearean role; being cast by producer/director Joseph Papp as Hamlet and the benefits, especially for minority actors, of working with the New York Shakespeare Festival; his views on Shakespeare; developing as a Shakespearean actor and his various professional experiences playing Shakespearean roles; the professional climate for Black actors at present in comparison with the 1960s; the ramifications of the high cost of tickets on Broadway; succeeding as a Black performer in the entertainment industry; his experience performing in the play I'm not Rappaport; his influences and the qualities that make a good actor.
