Summary
Ibrahim Farrah (full name Robert Ibrahim Farrah, also known as Bobby), an eminent performer, teacher, and scholar of Middle Eastern dance, and the founder/publisher of Arabesque magazine, discusses his parents' emigration from Lebanon during the Depression; growing up in a Lebanese immigrant community; the various terms used for Middle Eastern dance (Oriental dance, danse orientale, raks al sharqi); the interrelationships of Middle Eastern dance, music, and culture. He gives a brief history of the American fascination with Oriental dance and Orientalism, and notes the current decline of interest in belly dancing in the U.S., after its popularity in the previous decade. He also discusses the importance of music in Middle Eastern culture; creativity and fusion in ethnic dance; La Meri's contributions to the study and performance of ethnic dance; dance critics and ethnic dance; the complexity of Middle Eastern dance in view of its antiquity, geographic range, and regional variations; the importance of discipline in studying dance; and the dancer's need to transcend the purely physical aspects of dancing.
