Summary
Lecture-demonstration on the many facets of Haitian dance and music. Jean Léon Destiné explores the historical and cultural background of the dances, songs, and instrumental pieces: the artistic heritage of the Africans brought to Haiti as slaves, the influence of their European masters, the reflection of the beliefs of voodoo or voudoun, the slaves' rebellion. The program includes: an invocation to Papa Legba and Papa Damballah, a work-song and dance, contredanse/Juba, merengue (Angelico), compas, rabodaille, mazoune, Congo paillette, yanvalou, nago, ibo, pas rigole, mahi, zépaules, Dahomey, Petro, and Banda.
