- Summary
- Performance of a dance drama in the classical Indian dance form called Kathakali, which originated in the south Indian state of Kerala around the seventeenth century. The roles are all played by men, and a conspicuous characteristic of the form is their elaborate, non-naturalistic makeup. In this recording, English subtitles interpret the song lyrics and hand gestures, or mudras, that convey the story. In Kalyanasougandhikam, the dance drama presented here, Bhima, son of the wind god, seeks the rare flower soughandhika at the behest of his wife Panchali. His pride is humbled in a confrontation with the monkey Hanuman.
