- Summary
- Performance of Kutiyattam, the Sanskrit theater form of Kerala in south India. One of the oldest theater forms in the world, Kutiyattam dates back some 2,000 years. This recording depicts the play Kailasodharanan, a chapter from the Hindu epic the Ramayana. Presented in flashback, the demon king Ravana, ruler of Lanka, recalls how he raised Mount Kailasa, the abode of Lord Parameshwaran (Shiva), and the curses he incurred through this deed. A single actor, Kalamandalam Sivan Namboodiri, costumed as Ravana, plays all the roles, which include Lord Parameshwaran and his consort Parvati, a charioteer, and an elephant encountered on the mountain. English subtitles interpret his opening speech and the mime and mudras (hand gestures) through which he conveys the action.
