Summary
Benjamin Harkarvy, head of the ballet project at Jacob's Pillow, is interviewed in front of an audience of students. The interview focuses on Harkarvy's personal views on dance and the history of 20th century ballet. Harkarvy speaks about how he started dancing; the experience of seeing Alexandra Danilova performing in Swan lake; the influence of his teacher Edward Caton; and how he began teaching and decided to give up performing; the French, Italian and Russian schools of ballet; his own personal views on ballet technique and the spiritual aspect of dance. Harkarvy comments on Erik Bruhn's development; Lupe Serrano's virtuosity; Nora Kaye's dramatic skills; Antony Tudor's narrative ballets; Balanchine's pure dance ballets; Anna Sokolow's ideas about movement. Harkarvy discusses his love of movement and his opinion of contemporary dance which is based around ideas rather than movement; the current dance scene; the lack of development of ballet choreography and the trend of ballet companies performing modern dance works. Finally, Harkarvy discusses his foundation of the Nederlands Dans Theater and its influence on European dance companies, and gives advice to young dancers.
