Summary
  • Inside/out is a series of outdoor programs in which artists perform and discuss their choreography with audiences in an informal setting. In this program, Yoshiko Chuma and the School of Hard Knocks present excerpts of a work in progress, The man who never wasn't, developed during the company's residency at Jacob's Pillow. Chuma describes plans for the piece and discusses the sections that are presented. The recorded music used in this performance is not the score for the piece. Chuma discusses the way the School of Hard Knocks combines text and movement and how the work in progress developed. In a question-and-answer session with the audience, speakers from the audience are inaudible. Dancer Harry Whittaker Sheppard discusses his view of meaning in dance. Chuma discusses the experience of living in the United States before becoming fluent in English. Chuma directs an audience participation exercise demonstrating her ideas about movement.
