Summary
Norton Owen, associate director of Jacob's Pillow, introduces Bessie Schönberg to a group of interns working at Jacob's Pillow during the summer of 1986. Schönberg speaks about how to look at dance, concentrating mainly on the difficulties presented by new dance. She discusses intellectual versus kinetic aspects of dance; the titles of new dance works; the downtown New York dance scene, the Dance Theatre Workshop and Bessie Schönberg Theatre; the importance of seeing new dance works more than once. Schönberg comments on the work of Danny Buraczeski, Fred Holland and Ishmael Houston-Jones, and Victoria Marks, all of whose works were performed at Jacob's Pillow in 1986. Schönberg recalls her experience dancing with Martha Graham and her interest in modern art during her youth in Dresden.
