Description
1 videocassette (VHS, NTSC) (100 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
Three-part television tribute to the luminaries of the Palace Theater in New York City, produced as a fund-raiser for the Actors' Fund of America. In the first part, oldtimers "Pop" and "Flo" (played by Eddie Albert and Jean Stapleton) reminisce about the golden years of vaudeville to present-day performer Michele Lee; stars of the past are impersonated by contemporary stars or in some instances played by themselves. During this section, George Burns receives an award from the Actors' Fund of America, presented by the Fund's president, Nedda Harrigan Logan. In the second part, the Palace's house press agent (played by Edward Asner) discusses performers who made the transition from vaudeville to film, illustrated by film clips, and the Palace's reincarnation as a stage for solo performers. The third part, introduced by Lauren Bacall, celebrates the Palace's new phase as a venue for musicals. Tap dancer Gregory Hines appears at ca. 44 min. into the tape as legendary tap star Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, singing "Doin' the new low down" and performing his signature stair dance.
