- Profile of theatrical producer Joseph Papp. Discussion includes Papp's accomplishments as founder and director of the New York Shakespeare Festival and as producer of Broadway's longest running musical A chorus line; the history of Papp's production of free Shakespeare plays in Central Park, including interview excerpts with actors Jerry Stiller and Elizabeth McGovern who discuss performing in the outdoor plays. Includes interview excerpts with Papp in which he discusses memorizing lines from Shakespeare at age twelve, his objectives as a producer of Shakespeare, his casting of then-unknown actors George C. Scott, Kevin Kline and Meryl Streep in Shakespearean roles, his educational program in Shakespeare for junior and senior high school students, and his love of his work and commitment to his public. Features footage of Papp on the street and at the Public Theater, performance clips of A chorus line, and photographs and images related to his various productions.
