- Summary
- Charlie Rose and guests discuss the career and legacy of theatrical producer Joseph Papp (1921-1991), who has died at the age of 70. Considered one of the most influential men in American theater, Papp created the New York Shakespeare Festival and the Public Theater, and produced over 350 plays and musicals in his lifetime, including the long-running Broadway hit A chorus line. Papp was known for producing socially challenging, often controversial works. New York times drama critic Frank Rich discusses Papp's role in the theatrical revolution bieginning in the 1960s that shifted artistic control away from Broadway and allowed the growth of Off-Broadway, regional and local theater; the qualities that made Papp an extraordinary producer; his social vision, including his support for free theater and multiracial casting; what motivated and interested him as a producer; and his willingness to fight for his beliefs, as exemplified in his battle with New York City Parks Commissioner Robert Moses, and refusal to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee; and his role as nurturer of artistic talent. Program includes excerpts from the 1989 WNET-TV retrospective on Papp hosted by Robert Lipsyte (see NCOX 5148).
- Actors Anne Jackson and Eli Wallach also discuss their views of Papp and their experiences working with him at the beginning of his career in the 1950s, and later in such plays as The nest of the wood grouse (1984) by Victor Rozov and in the 1989 revival of Hy Kraft's Cafe crown.
