  • Sylvia Ardyn Boone gives a slide show and lecture about aesthetics and ideals of beauty in West Africa. The slides include photographs of people and sculpture from West Africa. Boone discusses the following subjects in relation to West African cultures: aspects of self-presentation, the use of masks in ritual, the focus on female beauty, the importance of dance, the significance of hairstyles, and views on the purpose of beauty.
  • In an interview, Pearl Primus speaks about her family origins, how she started dancing, her first visit to Africa, her experience dancing for the king of the Watusi, the African view of dance as an integral part of life, African dances relating to fertility, childrearing, and stages of life, and her initiation into African societies.
