  • "MATTER is when it is for the sake of the work, & is the work therein contained, no more; its title (defying being like defining) proposes that see, seem, see in, see through, seem to, see to, are rooted meaningfully in their common verb. [...] The central fact of place where I am is River, running towards the City. [...] So the movements of MATTER are unlikely to be uniform. [...] As from Mr. [Charles] Olson's poem herewith one can learn that How To End A Poem is learning when the poem ends."--From statement of purpose on final page of issue no. 1.
  • A note in issue no. 4 contains an admonishment against unsolicited submissions: "Poets--use yr energies in the work, not in the post office."
  • Numerous references throughout relating to the filmmaker Stan Brakhage, including an early draft of "A Moving Picture Giving and Taking Book" in no. 3; a long poem by Brakhage in no. 4, and additional criticism of Brakhage's films by Kelly.
  • Other contributors include Carolee Schneeman, Cid Corman, Leroi Jones (later, Amiri Baraka), Paul Blackburn, Diane Wakoski, Jackson Mac Low, Aram Saroyan, Gerrit Lansing, and Diane Di Prima.
