Summary
Theatrical producer Joseph Papp is presented the 1991 Jujamcyn Theaters Award. The Award is a prize given annually to a theater organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the development of creative talent for the theater. Joanne Akalaitis accepts the $50,000 award on behalf of Papp who is not present at the ceremony. Includes speeches by Mayor David Dinkins, drama critic Frank Rich, and Papp's associates Bernard Gersten, George C. Wolfe, Jason Steven Cohen and Akalaitis who discuss Papp's vision and his legacy as founder and director of the New York Shakespeare Festival Public Theater; the importance of the Public Theater as a theatrical organization; the purpose of the award and its intended use; their experiences working with Papp; Papp's appointment of Akalaitis, and the future of the Public Theater under her direction.
