- Summary
- In an unedited interview probably meant for inclusion in a longer program, choreographer Stephan Koplowitz discusses his career and current projects. Working with performers of different ages and backgrounds, with or without formal dance training, he creates works focusing on people and their multiplicity. He describes his training as a composer; his late start in dance, which led nonetheless to an M.F.A. degree in choreography from the University of Utah and fellowships at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival; his participation, at the instigation of executive director David R. White, in Dance Theater Workshop's Public Imaginations outreach program; his previous projects with community members in various cities. Speaking of his aims as teacher and choreographer, he describes how he founded Creative Club House, a mentoring program for a small group of underprivileged students, and what he has gained from his outreach activities. He discusses the critical reception of his most recent production at Dance Theater Workshop, and expresses his belief that his approach pushes boundaries. Asked by the off-camera interviewer to describe his work in basic terms, he reiterates his focus on people and also on buildings; his use of text along with movement and music; and his attraction to the open-mindedness of the dance world, with its tradition of mixing different arts.
