- Description
- 1 videocassette (VHS, NTSC) (145 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
- Summary
- Presented as part of The Studies Project, an ongoing series, in conjunction with the first annual New York Improvisation Festival (later called Improvisation Festival/New York). The program opens with an improvisation session (ca. 52 min.), followed by a panel discussion (ca. 86 min.), a solo improvisation by Danny [Lepkoff], and views of an exhibition of his photographs. The panel attempts to identify and explore specific questions and issues within the broad field of dance improvisation. Each panelist discusses his/her approach to improvisation: why they engage in it, what they get out of it, ways of using it (e.g., as an adjunct to teaching technique, as a choreographic tool, in performance). Topics include: the audience's role in improvisation; perceiving form, whether abstract or realistic, in improvisation; dealing with physical contact and the emotional interactions that may arise during the improvisation process; the development of a special mode of thinking as a result of improvisation training; differences and similarities between improvisation and dance in general; presenting improvisation as performance, and dealing with different audience expectations; improvisation as a process comparable to that in music, particularly jazz; expanding the audience for improvisation.
