"Commissioned from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and set to music by Richard Gordon-Smith for soloist, chorus and orchestra. It tells the story of the loss at sea of the composer's great-grandfather, the captain of the Thames & Medway barge Cynthia in 1895, and of his last message to his wife, cast into the sea in a bottle and subsequently retrieved and forwarded to her. The message is still in the possession of the family"--T.p. verso.

"This edition was printed on a Western proofing press at the Old School Press in Monotype Gill Sans 262 on Rivoli paper.The type was machine cast by Harry McIntosh from electronic copy. Adrian Henri's pastels were printed at the Senecio Press by Adrian Lack. Copies 241-280 were reserved in sheets for binders. The other copies were bound by Rachel and Richard James with Larroque hand-made paper on the boards and Canson end-papers. The work was done in the spring of 2001"--Colophon.
