Clay Taliaferro recalls his first view of José Limón, on television; attending his first live performance of the company, which included Limón's last performance in The moor's pavane; learning the Pegasus section of Limón's dance work The winged; mastering the Limón style; Limón's invitation to him to join the company; his first experiences in the company; the life-affirming qualities of Limón's repertory; his own and the company's reactions to Limón's death; his initial discomfort at learning Limón's A choreographic offering, in which he subsequently danced a solo also performed by interviewer Ann Vachon.

Taliaferro describes his experiences of dancing in Limón's works The Emperor Jones, The moor's pavane, Missa brevis, and The traitor. He discusses what he gained from the direction of Ruth Currier, who led the company after Limón's death; Limón's theatrical craft and ability to communicate with audiences; how Limón's desire to reach audiences may have been affected by his minority status in the U.S. and his awareness of the low esteem accorded the arts; the insights Taliaferro himself gained by directing others in The moor's pavane; whether his perceived resemblance to Limón was a blessing or curse; Limón's legacy to future generations.
