Summary
This tape contains unedited footage taken for a segment created by Independent Television News during a week of performances by the Merce Cunningham Dance Company at the Sadler's Wells Theatre in London. The first four minutes of the tape contain footage of Cunningham watching an on-stage rehearsal by his company. A ten-minute interview with Cunningham, filmed backstage, follows. Cunningham discusses his collaboration with John Cage and with visual artists; his thoughts on time; his opinion of classical ballet; the goal of his teaching. The last seven minutes of the tape contain an interview with Richard Alston. Alston discusses Cunningham's influence on contemporary dance, the difference between his style and the style of Martha Graham, the relationship between dance and music in his work, and the quality of his company.
