Summary
  • In the first segment, Sherry Dean reports on Merce Cunningham's use of Life Forms software to develop his choreography. The segment includes comments on their experience with Life Forms by Cunningham and dancers Jenifer Weaver and Michael Cole, as well as footage of Cunningham using the software, and of rehearsals in the Cunningham studios.
  • The second segment gives an overview of Merce Cunningham's career and influence. The segment includes clips from archival footage documenting Cunningham's career and comments from Cunningham on his piece Rune (1959); his artistic philosophy; the relationship between dance and music; his use of Life Forms software, and of chance operations, in developing his choreography.
  • The third segment consists of an interview with Cunningham by Charlie Rose. Cunningham discusses his feelings about his artistic reputation; how he began dancing; his first meeting with John Cage; the origin of his company; his work with video and with Life Forms software. A clip from Beach birds for camera is shown. Afterwards Cunningham discusses the making of the videodance Beach birds for camera, qualities he looks for in dancers, and his personal heroes.
