Unedited footage recorded for the documentary Limón: a life beyond words. Charles D. Tomlinson, nicknamed Chuck, became José Limón's dresser in 1960; he also designed costumes for the José Limón Dance Company, and became the assistant and close personal friend of both Limón and his wife Pauline Lawrence.   • Cassette 1 (ca. 59 min.). Begins with views of a poster of José Limón, created for an engagement at the Operan in Stockholm, followed by setting-up shots. The interview starts at ca. 4 1/2 min. Charles Tomlinson describes first seeing the company in London in 1956; joining the company as a wardrobe assistant in 1960; becoming Pauline Lawrence's assistant upon Limón's hospitalization; Lawrence's view of herself as Limón's helper and supporter; Limón's reaction to her death in 1971; the writing of Limón's autobiography at the instigation of Jose de la Torre Bueno, an editor at Wesleyan Press; the creation of Limón's works Carlota and Orfeo after Lawrence's death; his agnosticism, contrasted with the religious nature of works such as Missa brevis; his relationship with his siblings; his paintings. Tomlinson paints a verbal picture of Limón in his dressing room before a performance, describing his makeup, calmness and confidence in his artistic powers, and his negative opinion of critics.

Tomlinson discusses Limón's appreciation of good cooking; his working relationships with dancers Louis Falco, Clay Taliaferro, Pauline Koner, Daniel Lewis, and Sarah Stackhouse; his dance work The unsung, which was performed in silence; his refusal to cater to the lowest common denominator; his belief that humans should foster the best aspects of their nature. He recalls Limón's contacts with Rudolf Nureyev when Nureyev acquired The moor's pavane for his own company, and Limón's friendships with other choreographers, among them Merce Cunningham, Jennifer Muller (a former Limón company member), Martha Graham, and Agnes de Mille. He discusses some of the lighting designers who worked for the company, particularly "Tommy" [Thomas R. Skelton]; Limón's love of music; Limón's death, which he witnessed. He refutes implications of a homosexual relationship between Limón and himself.
