Description
1 videocassette (VHS, NTSC) (55 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
Unedited footage recorded for the documentary Limón: a life beyond words. Mexican dancer Valentina Castro first studied and danced with José Limón in 1951, when he taught and performed at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. She discusses aspects of his work Tonantzintla, in which she danced the role of the little mermaid: the baroque church that inspired it; the scene and costume designs by Miguel Covarrubias; the character of the choreography; its reception by the audience. She also discusses her ensuing dance studies in the U.S.; the Mexicans' support for Limón; his work La Malinche, based on the Spanish conquest of Mexico. In her discussion in Spanish, she restates these points, and also discusses her impressions of Limón; his classes in technique and choreography; viewing The moor's pavane and Humphrey's The story of mankind; her observations of the dancing of Pauline Koner, Limón, and Lucas Hoving; Limón's influence on her own teaching; her memories of his wife Pauline Lawrence. The tape also contains a view of a portrait of Valentina Castro, and views of the interior and exterior of the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
