Summary

Documentary on four principal male dancers of American Ballet Theatre. Segments highlighting each dancer are intercut with rehearsals for Non troppo, a new ballet by Mark Morris, featuring all four. Each dancer revisits scenes of his childhood and looks back on his early training and formative influences. Family members and former teachers help trace the course of his rise. Additional insights are provided by Kevin McKenzie, artistic director of American Ballet Theatre, and Jacques d'Amboise, a former principal dancer of New York City Ballet and the founder of the National Dance Institute. Choreographer Mark Morris discusses his observations of the four, and praises Mikhail Baryshnikov's contributions to male dancing. The program is generously illustrated with excerpts from dance performances past and present, particularly American Ballet Theatre's production of Le corsaire. It concludes with a performance of Morris' Non troppo, recorded before a live audience.
