Summary
Master dancer/choreographer Mamadou Dahoue leads four dances from the Ivory Coast, teaching through demonstration. The dances are: Coucouba, a celebration dance (taught in slow and normal tempos); Ngoron, an initiation dance (slow tempo); Zaouly, a rejoicing and mourning dance (slow tempo); and Djouanigbe, a rite of passage dance. In the sections titled Zaouly mask and Djouanigbe mask, Dahoue dances in the appropriate masks and full costume. The class concludes with floor progressions and short solos by each dancer. In voiceover, Dahoue shares his reflections on dancing in Africa, drumming, mask dances, and the importance of spirituality in Africa. Footage recorded in the Ivory Coast depicts dancing by adults and children.
