- Summary
- Part of The Studies Project, an ongoing series of discussions, performances, and other presentations. Prior to the interview, Bessie Schönberg, an eminent teacher of dance composition, sets tasks for four choreographers and their dancers. During the interview, her soft voice is sometimes difficult to hear because of background sounds. She discusses her studies with Martha Hill and her membership in Martha Graham's dance company before the knee injury that ended her performing career. She reminisces about assisting Hill as a teacher at the Bennington School of Dance; discovering her interest in teaching dance composition; teaching at Sarah Lawrence College, where she developed a dance program; studying pre-classic dance with Louis Horst, who later invited her to teach composition at the American Dance Festival in New London, Conn. She describes her concept of her role in a composition class, which she doesn't look upon as teaching; her departure from Sarah Lawrence and the independent engagements that followed; and her workshop for choreographers at Dance Theatre Workshop. A brief question-and-answer session follows. The four choreographers then show their pieces, which are followed by questions and comments from the audience. The dancers are introduced orally at the end of the program.
