- Summary
- Documentary on the dancer Rudolf Nureyev, created in conjunction with the exhibition Capturing Nureyev: James Wyeth paints the dancer, organized by the Farnsworth Art Museum of Rockland, Maine, in 2002. Artist James Wyeth [also known as Jamie] looks back on his collaboration with Nureyev as a subject for his painting, while Clive Barnes, a dance critic and historian, provides a broader view of Nureyev's life. Wyeth recalls his first overtures to Nureyev, and his attempt to enlist the aid of Lincoln Kirstein; his observations of Nureyev's preparations for Broadway performances of Pierrot lunaire; sketching Nureyev at his daily ballet class; introducing his father Andrew Wyeth to Nureyev; Nureyev's Halloween costume; Nureyev's interest in all the arts; Nureyev's demanding nature as a painting subject; observations of Nureyev in rehearsal with Martha Graham. Barnes discusses Nureyev's ballet training in Russia; the influence of his teacher Aleksandr Pushkin; his defection to the West; his impact in the pas de deux from Le corsaire (illustrated by a film clip); the partnership of Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn (illustrated by a clip of the pas de deux from Les sylphides); the difficulty of capturing dancers in painting; Nureyev's legacy in dance; his rootlessness; dance images of Nureyev in flight. The documentary is profusely illustrated with Wyeth's portraits and sketches of Nureyev.
