Gallery video created for the exhibition Capturing Nureyev: James Wyeth paints the dancer, organized by the William A. Farnsworth Art Museum (June 9, 2002-Jan. 5, 2003) and the Wyeth Center, Rockland, Maine, in collaboration with The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C. (Feb. 7-Mar. 10, 2002), and The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts (Mar. 22-May 25, 2002). The exhibition also appeared at the Brandywine River Museum, Jan. 18-May 18, 2003. Artist Jamie Wyeth talks about his collaboration with Rudolf Nureyev as a subject: his first overtures to the dancer; his attempt to enlist the aid of Lincoln Kirstein; his observations of Nureyev's preparations for Broadway performances of Pierrot lunaire; sketching Nureyev in his daily ballet class; introducing his father Andrew Wyeth to Nureyev; Nureyev's Halloween costume; Nureyev's secretiveness about his HIV-positive status. The video is profusely illustrated with Wyeth's paintings and sketches of Nureyev.
