- Summary
- Informational video about three dance works to be performed during the 20th anniversary season of Urban Bush Women, a performance ensemble based in Brooklyn, N.Y., whose stated goal is to produce "bold and life affirming Dance Theater based on women's experiences, African American history and cultural influences of the African Diaspora" [from the Urban Bush Women WWW site]. The company's founder and artistic director, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, discusses the works Batty moves (1995), Girlfriends (1986), and Walking with Pearl, inspired by Pearl Primus (1919-1994), the African-American modern dancer and choreographer, anthropologist, and activist. [Walking with Pearl took shape as two works: Walking with Pearl--Africa diaries, first presented in 2004, and Walking with Pearl--the Southern diaries, commissioned and presented by the American Dance Festival in 2005.] Excerpts from all three works are shown; Walking with Pearl is portrayed in b&w rehearsal footage. Pearl Primus dances in a brief clip filmed at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in 1950.
