Summary
Documentary on the life and career of Gret Palucca (1902-1993), a German modern dancer, choreographer, and teacher. The program traces the course of her richly eventful life: her training with Mary Wigman; the opening of her own school; her association with the Bauhaus, particularly with painter Wassily Kandinsky; her tours of Germany; her solo Serenata, marking a turning point in her work and life; her performance at the 1936 Olympic Games; the closing of her school and company under the Nazi regime; her survival of the 1945 bombing of Dresden; the reopening of the Palucca Schule Dresden, which was nationalized in 1949; her difficulties under the Communists in East Germany; the paradox of her many awards and honors in later life, coupled with the close monitoring of her actions by the East German government. Much of the program examines her special qualities as a teacher, as recalled by her students. Her impact and legacy are also explored in interviews with her colleagues and contemporaries. In the many film clips that illustrate this program, she is seen dancing in works by Mary Wigman; performing her own choreography as a solo recitalist; dancing with members of her company; and teaching young dancers at the Palucca Schule Dresden and elsewhere. Her choreography is also performed by her dance company and students.
