  • Text editors: Judith Diment and Christopher Humphries.

  • Text vol. is rev. ed. of pts. 1-2 of: Catalogue of the natural history drawings commissioned by Joseph Banks on the Endeavour voyage 1768-1771, held in the British Museum (Natural History), 1984-1987. (Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History). Historical series ; v. 11-12).
  • The engravings are based on watercolor drawings prepared from Parkinson's field sketches with the aid of his notes and the original specimens. Parkinson completed 280 drawings before his death during the voyage; remainder completed in England under the supervision of Banks and Solander by John Frederick Miller, James Miller, John Cleveley, Thomas Burgis and Frederick P. Nodder. Cf. introd. to text vol.
  • The engravings were originally prepared under Banks' direction, and some proofs were struck in b&w, but they remained unpublished until 1973, when 30 of them, printed in b&w, were published under the auspices of the present owner, the British Museum (Natural History), under the title: Captain Cook's florilegium.
  • Engravers: Daniel MacKenzie, Gerrit Sibelius, Gabriel Smith, Charles White, William Tringham, Robert Blyth, Frederick P. Nodder, Jabez Goldar, D.J.M. van Drazowa, Thomas Scratchley, John Lee, Jean-Baptiste Michel, William Smith, Edward Walker, John Roberts, Thomas Morris, A. Bannerman and Francis Chesham.
  • The engravings are printed in color à la poupée in up to 17 colors, with additional watercolor touches, on Somerset mould-made 300gsm paper produced in a special making by the Inveresk Paper Co. Each is blind-embossed with publisher's stamps and the date and numbered and initialed in pencil by the printer, and inserted in a window mount from the same making of the paper.
  • "Banks' florilegium, published in thirty-four parts, contains the 738 engravings from the original eighteenth-century copperplates. The other five, for which the original plates were stolen during the publication of Captain Cook's florilegium (1973), have been printed from plates engraved by two of the master engravers at the Bank of England Printing Works. These five plates are contained in the supplementary part"--Pref. to text vol.
  • Plates in text vol. are b&w impressions of 7 of the engravings.
