- Summary
- Disc 1 (ca. 73 min.). Following general remarks on several topics, Erick Hawkins speaks about the basic elements of rhythm, using a variety of examples and methods to illustrate his points, for example, the tapping of beats and a discussion of poetic meter.
- Disc 2 (ca. 47 min.). Hawkins speaks about the principles of movement, again using a variety of examples and methods to illustrate his points, beginning with a discussion of the concept of "principle" and including discussions of the principle of flotation, scientifc investigation, and Isadora Duncan; the principle of gravity as the foundation of movement.
- Disc 3 (ca. 47 min.). Hawkins continues to speak about movement as he leads the class in movement exercises [short gap; following may be recording of a different class]; discussion of the concept of art, in general terms, using a variety of examples.

- Class taught by Erick Hawkins on June 3, 1985; this recording is the first in a series of recordings of classes on dance composition taught by Hawkins at New York University, New York City. The recording contains exchanges of questions and answers between Hawkins and the class participants, including David Sears, who recorded the class.
- The sound quality is often poor, especially in discs 2 and 3, and the recording is marred by extraneous noise. The sound quality of the questions and comments by the students is sometimes very poor.
